G-PAC CALLS ON ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS TO PASS KARINA’S BILL BEFORE END OF VETO SESSION

CHICAGO — Today, the Gun Violence Prevention PAC (G-PAC) released the following statement from President and CEO Kathleen Sances urging state lawmakers to pass Karina’s Bill before the end of this veto session. Karina’s Bill is a measure that would clarify and strengthen the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and the Firearm Restraining Order Act to require guns be removed when domestic violence survivors are granted firearm remedies in an order of protection.

“Keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers should not be a controversial stance With the alarming rates of gun-related domestic violence injuries and fatalities in Illinois, the safety of survivors must be prioritized above all.

“As it currently stands, the risk of homicide increases by a staggering 500 percent when a gun is present during a domestic violence incident. This needs to change.

Karina’s Bill will protect survivors by removing guns from the equation while seeking support or leaving their situations – which is a dangerous and vulnerable time. The gaps in current Illinois law are not conducive to protecting women and children from retaliation or preventing further abuse from their abusers.

“We have a duty to the countless victims in Illinois to protect them and provide a future free of harm.  Our lawmakers must pass Karina’s Bill to end the gun lobby’s false vision of public safety. The lives of vulnerable women and children are not be exchanged to fill their pockets with blood money.”
